Kris Abrams

Hi, and welcome to my practice! I practice psychotherapy and shamanic healing in Cortez, Mancos, and Durango, Colorado, and I also work with clients from around the world by phone.

Psychotherapy and shamanic healing are both wonderful ways to help people live lives of authenticity, meaning and joy in a modern world that can make this challenging. Because each one of us is a complex collection of thoughts, emotions, experiences, behaviors, relationships, a body, and a soulful/spiritual self, I work holistically with each individual and incorporate a range of therapeutic techniques. These include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy;
  • EMDR;
  • Mindfulness;
  • Gestalt;
  • Nature-based psychotherapy/Ecopsychology/Ecotherapy,
  • And, for those who desire it, shamanic journeying.

My formal education includes a M.A. from Oxford University, where I was a Rhodes Scholar, and a M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Prescott College. I am trained as an EMDR therapist. I have also studied privately with my shamanic teacher for ten years.

To learn more about my practice, see To contact me directly, send an email to [email protected], or call (970) 403-5018. I look forward to meeting you.

I practice CranioSacral Therapy and I'm studying Ortho-Bionomy and applying it in my sessions as appropriate. Both are gentle, hands-on modalities born out of osteopathy. They tap into the body's self-correcting mechanisms and wisdom to enable healing without pain or force. I work with the nervous system to release restrictions deep within the body to improve function and find ease.  The combination of modalities is highly complementary and effective with my clients.

CranioSacral Therapy and Ortho-Bionomy can be helpful with issues such as:

  • stress and tension
  • chronic pain
  • emotional and physical trauma and PTSD
  • migraines
  • concussions
  • orthopedic issues
  • and many more

My background includes my studies with Upledger Institute (CranioSacral Therapy) and the Rocky Mountain Center for Ortho-Bionomy, life-long study of different kinds of healing, my own experiences dealing with chronic pain,  and a career of twenty years in biology, botany and ecology with a Master of Science degree in Forestry. I've been trained to take in the big picture, whether it involves a person or a landscape. I look for patterns and links among issues, always keeping in mind that I am working with a system, full of parts that I see and know, and others of which I am not aware. This perspective creates an effective approach because it takes the whole person into account and helps me to see with the eyes of the heart. For, as the fox says in The Little Prince, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
